


What is Color Guard?

Color guard with band is an integral part of marching band performances, blending visual artistry with musical elements of the ensemble. Typically performed during halftime shows or competitions, color guard members enhance the band's presentation through the use of flags, mock rifles, sabers and other props, adding a dynamic visual dimension to the music. Their routines involve a combination of dance, synchronized equipment work and intricate choreography that complements the band's musical arrangements. The color guard's movements in the music are designed to highlight key movements in the music and enhance the overall impact of the performance. Together with the band , the color guard helps create a unified, powerful display that engages both the audience and judges at competitive events.
What is Winter Guard?

Winter guard is an indoor performing art that combines elements of dance, theater, and color guard, typically performed during winter months. It evolved from traditional color guard, which is often seen at outdoor events like football games and marching band competitions. In winter guard, performers use equipment such as flags, mock rifles, and sabers, along with choreographed dance routines set to music, all performed inside a gym or arena. The activity is known for its athleticism, creativity, and emotional expression, often telling stories or conveying themes through complex visual and musical elements. Competitions are held at regional, national and international levels. with groups judged on aspect like equipment handling, movement, design, and overall effect.
Milton-Union Varisity Guard

The Milton-Union Varsity Guard, comprised of 7th-12th grade Milton-Union students, is a diverse and dynamic team that brings together students across a wide age range to perform in both fall and winter programs. Despite the varying levels of experience, these young performers collaborate to master complex routines involving dance, flag work and the use of equipment like mock rifles and sabers. The older members often serve as as role models for the younger ones, helping foster a supportive and tight-knit team environment. Competing at the varsity level, this group showcases moderate technical skills and artistic expression, working together to create visually captivating performances. The experience not only hones their physical and creative abilities but also teaches them teamwork, discipline and dedication as they prepare for competitions at regional or national levels.
The Milton Minis

The Milton MInis are a group comprised of 2nd-6th grade Milton-Union students that introduces young students to the basics of flag work, mock rifle, dance and teamwork in a fun and supportive environment. At this level, the focus is often building foundational skills such as learning basic choreography, developing coordination and understanding rhythm while fostering creativity and self-expression. The routines are designed to be age-appropriate with similar movements and equipment use, allowing children to gain confidence as the perform alongside their peers. These young performers may participate in school events, community parades, football games and winter competitions. Beyond the physical skills, participation in color guard at this age helps develop teamwork, communication and discipline while experiencing the joy of performing in front of an audience.
